Becoming a Chorus Member
You want to be a member of the Heart of Maryland Chorus -- That's great.Let's start with Visiting a Rehearsal and be sure this is for you.
Being an active member of the Chorus entails:
- Filling out a membership application
- A mild background check (specifically against sex offender registries (this is required by our parent organization)
- Paying dues to the Barbershop Harmony Society, the Mid-Atlantic District and the chorus. These are annual and range based on age (both youth and senior discounts).
- Learning music (ideally at home or in the car). However, you do not have to know how to read music - we provide sheet music which has the words for the 4 parts (Bass, Baritone, Lead, and Tenor) and you can learn the notes by listening to and singing along with learning tracks we provide to members.
- Civil behavior - leave all the scary social topics of conversation at home. We're here to enjoy fellowship and music. At rehearsals, people are sometimes inspired to chatter at the ends of songs - but that's when the director wants to tell the chorus what he just heard. So, be ready to listen!
- We typically attend two contests each year, often in northern Maryland or southern Pennsylvania, which ideally requires a two-night stay at a hotel.
- We aim to have about one public performance a month, usually within an hour's drive of Catonsville.
- We typically have an annual show in the Fall, which will require a Friday evening and Saturday most of the day (for warmups, practice, preparing the stage and venue)
- We typically have an event in the Spring called Lasagna with Barbershop, which is a fantastic evening in which the chorus sets up a hall, prepares salad and bread, and dishes out steaming hot lasagna to serve our audience. Then, we perform for them.
If this sounds like fun, please check in with our membership guy Joseph Chilcoat, membership@heartofmaryland.org who can give you details on how to join.
