Who We Are

The Heart of Maryland Chorus is a mid-sized chorus in the Mid-Atlantic District with very regular attendance of 30-35 members weekly.  We have been chartered for over 60 years and have competed frequently up to District level, with respectable outcomes.  The chorus is very active in the community for the full period of the year with sing-outs, two annual show events to raise money, intra-chapter quartet contests and fun events, big-level gigs such as singing National Anthem at major league baseball games, holiday packages and in sundry other things.  The Chapter Board is very engaged and almost every member participates in some type of assignment or committee effort.  The age range of the members is from 14 to over 80 years, with a median around low 60’s, and with younger guys joining us (happily).  The music selection ranges from classic barbershop, to more modern material and with some level of complexity across a range of genres.  Our financial health is solid and we have been successful in attracting various grants from Arts Councils and from other governmental opportunities.  Over the course of the last 30 years, we have had great stability at our Director level, with two gentlemen having served wonderfully in that role. 

Who We Are Looking For:

We are hoping to attract a Director who is highly skilled in barbershop music, in teaching and coaching chorus and quartet singing and who wants to have as much fun as the members in the joy of performing and competing.  We have had great Directors who have been generous with their time, totally engaged in friendship and singing and community participation. 

Director Qualification List

Experience and Training

  • Degree or Equivalent experience in music related field.Preferred training in vocal and/or choral music
  • Experience (minimum 5 years overall) – one or more of the following areas
    • Front Line Director (3 or more years preferred)
    • Assistant/Associate Director (Significant experience)
    • BHS Directory Certification courses.Completion preferred
    • Vocal music educator
  • In-depth understanding of Barbershop style
  • Quartet experience a plus, or other performance experience

Commitment    

  • Required
    • Rehearsals – 45
    • Major Shows – 2 annual major shows (Annual Show, Lasagna)
    • Minor performances and Singouts – at least one per month
    • Contests – Division and District contests
  • Preferred
    • Other events – Willing to participate in Chapter building activities like internal QT contests, St. Patrick’s Day quartet night, social activities, etc.
    • Daytime performances when possible

Skills

  • Must have:
    • Excellent teaching skills
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
      • Ability to use electronic means of communication
    • Coachability
      • Willing to be coached
      • Willing to take additional training if needed
  • Preferred
    • Ability to play piano, for demonstration purposes when needed
    • Interest and willingness to try different learning techniques and styles
    • Ability to sing and teach multiple voice parts

Other

  • Prefer an individual with potential long-term relationship with chorus
  • Prefer someone who will become a part of the chapter, not just an employee
  • Someone with a willingness to work with and utilize the music team (i.e., Assistant directors and section leads)
  • Willing to work with coaches and provide other means of building chorus skills
